13. Final Selection

MY FINAL SELECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS

I have selected this photograph as a final image as I feel it portrays Nora Helmer as a caring mother who loves her child. I think that the composition of this photograph is perfect in capturing the photograph from a central perspective. I think that the expression on my face really depicts the character's attitude toward her family at the beginning of the play. The dark room print of it has a golden metallic kind of glare on it which I think really adds to the meaning of the photograph and the representation of it having been left in a house for a long time after their relationship broke down. When I come to presenting this in the gallery I will place this photograph inside a really big and grand photo frame - one that would stereotypically have been found in the house of Nora Helmer being of the social status she was. Underneath this photograph that is hanging on the wall will be a birdcage opened and representing the freedom of this 'little bird' seeing as the time frame I want to set my final selection is is in the time following her leaving Torvald.

I have chosen this photograph of one of my final photographs as I feel I have really captured and portrayed the naivety of Nora Helmer throughout the majority of the play. As a character she is blinded by the behaviour of her husband and as a result of this she cannot see or understand society or the "world outside". This then has the consequence of her doing exactly the same to her children. The dark room print of this is interesting as it is over exposed and therefore depicting how when your eyes are opened for the first time after being closed for so long that you see more than you have ever seen before and you see things so much brighter than before. This then adds to the effect of her leaving and how the room would then look. I will tuck this photo into the edge of the photo frame to kind of represent the explosion Nora had.
I think that this photograph is a powerful photograph as it is bold and speaks for itself. Nora as the play progresses comes to notice that she is all powerful as a woman and that no one has the right to treat her as anything less. When I printed this out in the dark room I cut out the photograph into lots of small pieces and then created an almost mosaic jigsaw out of the pieces. I did this because I wanted to show how everything that had ever damaged and effected Nora could be used as a positive - building her up again and she then had the ability to piece herself together and become a stronger person.

I have chosen to use this photograph as one of my final images because it shows the struggle Nora is beginning to go through and how she is beginning to lose a grip of her children and her life. I like that the expression on Nora's face is that of distress and anxiety. In the dark room I produced this photograph as a double exposure because I thought that it was important to show the chaoticness she was faced with as being a mother who's 'role' was to please her husband and act all inferior to him.

With this photograph I felt that it is a really strong image and really shows a sense of  calmness. I think this works as Nora becomes very calm when she has thought everything through about how she wants to deal with the situation she has found herself in. She is also stern and I think this photo captures a sense of her stern attitude. I like that this photo doesn't show the whole face as this represents the fact that Nora is not yet complete in herself.

I think that this photo is a very powerful image in representing the feelings of Nora Helmer in that moment when she gives her husband back his ring and storms out. I like the boldness of the photograph and the expression on Nora's face.

I really like this photograph as one of my final images. I think it captures perfectly the feelings and attitude of Nora Helmer at the end of the play. She no longer loves Torvald and she refuses him writing to her and she doesn't want anything more to do with the children as her husband so explicitly questioned her capability in bringing up the children.

I have chosen all of these photographs because I feel as though they speak out about a Dolls House and Feminism tied in together. I also like the story it tells without having the script there. Its left to the audiences own interpretations. However when I present this I would like to present it in an abandoned manner. I would like the three wedding dress photographs to be on three separate shelves on a book shelf. The top shelf will be the happy one along side a copy of the play. On the second shelf will be the beginning to feel distraught one along side a doll that is broken and on the third shelf shall be the final wedding photo with the babies hanging off me along side a wedding ring that has just been left there. Across the bookshelf will be cobwebs and the three photos will be the only photos framed. All of my photographs are going to be dark room prints in order to give them an old rustic effect. Then on the top of the bookshelf will be a dead plant with the petals all over the floor and shelves. Next to the bookshelf will be the 5 photos on the left hand side of the blog, these will go down in a jumbled unorganised manner. Then there will be a gap big enough for a painted quote ("I believe that before everything else, I am a human being just as much as you are ... or at any rate I shall try and become one") and then on the other side of the quote there will be my other 5 photos in the opposite order.

I have changed this idea of how I would like to present my final images. I would now like to have a big golden frame in the upper centre of my designated section. In that photo frame I would like the first photo (the happy one) hanging. The photo is significantly smaller than the frame and I like that because it will then draw attention to the photograph. Also through this I want to show how something isn't quite right in this 'happy home', something doesn't quite fit. I would then like to slot in all the other photographs around the edge of the frame. Along side these other photographs I would like to have quotes from the play written as notes and on ripped paper. I would like to do all of this in order to show that Nora Helmer left her mark on this family. Below the photo frame I would like there to be a round table draped with a dirty white cloth. On top of this cloth will be a birdcage on its side with its door open - this is to represent freedom and that Nora has broken free of this life. Her husband always addressed her as 'My little songbird' and so the birdcage represents the little songbird breaking free. Along side this birdcage I would like there to be a small bunch of dead flowers representing Torvalds love for his 'little songbird' and how she left them there to die. There will then be the dead petals on the floor around. Also on this table I am debating wether or not to have a ring symbolising that after all these years the ring is still in the exact same place it was left. I would still like to have cobwebs draping here and there just to show that this homely setting is aged and not looked after.
