11. Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman

I have chosen Cindy Sherman as one of my photographers as I think her eye for photography is something I can learn from and develop my ideas from.

I really like this photograph which is one of Cindy Sherman's film stills. It is an interesting photograph as looking at it from a feminist perspective back in the 1940s and 1950s this was how a woman were expected to look, with her hair done up and her face all covered in make up. And this is what society wanted. Back then society was defined by the portrayal of men and women in films. This photograph is a film still and has been staged as if it were part of a film showing that this is just a perception of what women should be looking like.

This photograph is also interesting as it is also a film still and here it shows a woman who is clearly educated as she is in a library choosing a book to read. I think that this photograph sets a spark in women and if it were a photograph taken in 1940/1950 (which it isn't) it would spark a passion within women for an education.
