12. Lynn Hershman Leeson

Lynn Hershman Leeson

I chose Lynn Hershman Leeson as one of my photographers as her feminist views are showcased through her films and photography. I find her work truly fascinating and her passion for the media is something that has inspired me and my work.

I find this photograph fascinating as it speaks loud from a feminist perspective. The fact that the woman's face is a camera shows how in society women are seen as possessions and are to always prepare themselves as if they were to be photographed. I find the whole concept of this photographer and all of these photographs so inspiring as it relates to my project so much. I like that this photograph is staged on a bed hinting of a woman's purpose in the bedroom.

I also find this photo equally as inspiring. The hand of the woman reaching out really represents the struggle women go through. She is reaching out because she wants to be released from this society that takes her body and objectifies it. In the view finder of the camera we can see the true woman's refection and that really impacts the audience as it shows that women are only given small opportunities for them to be them and one of those opportunities is in the reflection of a woman in the mirror or something else reflective.

I love this photograph because of the style of it, I find it fascinating how Lynn Hershman Leeson thought of painting over this image showing how society would wish to change the person captured in this photo and how she herself would like to change herself as a result of what society wants and how make up and products are applied to the face in order to change the natural face that lies beneath it therefore taking away the identity that so rightfully belongs to her.

This photograph speaks very loud from a feminist perspective as so often women are judged on what they wear and what their body is like but very rarely are a woman's eyes the focus of a man and very rarely is a woman allowed to have her opinion. I think the eyes in this photograph make a point about the fact that both men and women have eyes and the right to make their own judgements about things so why therefore if both men and women are of equal capability are they not allowed to be granted the right to equality.

I think that this photograph has a lot to say about feminism and sexuality of women in society in 1986. The positioning of the woman would suggest discomfort. The fact she has all her clothes and shoes on would suggest she is not planning on doing anything right then. However the fact that her eyes are closed and that she is on a bed could suggest a whole different scenario. Right now she looks as if she is drunk and unaware o0f where she is and who could be with her. Her shoes are still on and she is dressed as if she has just been out somewhere. This whole photograph and it's title 'seduction' suggests that a man is going to take advantage of this woman as he feels seduced by her. This is something that still happens in society now and something that needs to change and I think Lynn Hershman Leeson staged this photograph so that she could voice this message.

I Think that this photograph stands out from all her other photos. The colour added buy the paint adds a whole new perspective to the photograph.

I also found this photo intriguing as from a first impression of this photograph I am drawn immediately to the eyes however if she just had a normal face I wouldn't have been drawn to the eyes but rather her cleavage which therefore makes Lynn Hershman Leeson's point.
